1940s Style Opera Coat Black Velvet Old Hollywood Sz L #1228. An elegant 1940s style, midi length velvet opera coat with structured shoulders, raglan sleeves, a shawl collar hat extends around the neck and then down all the way to the hem, no closures, a charcoal satin lining, wide sleeves ruched on the inside seams and side pockets with diagonal outside plackets. The color is jet black, although most of the photos have been lightened to show detail. The coat has the label “J S Collections” and it was quality made in Canada. The measurements (approximate) are. Shoulder to hem 48. Shoulder to shoulder across the back 16. Cuff 2 1/2″ wide and 14″ around. I estimate that the opera coat is approximately equivalent to a modern US size L. However, it seems to fit a range of sizes. It is displayed on my US size 6 model and it seems to fit beautifully except the sleeves need to be shortened a bit. But the measurements show that this is a larger size. The fabric is 100% cotton velvet accorsinf to the label, and I believe the lining is acetate or rayon satin. Probably made in the 1980s when large shoulder pads were in, this opera coat nevertheless has all the elements of a 1940s style coat – shoulder pads, midi length, velvet fabric, simple clean lines, and quality manufacturing. There are no major condition issues with this opera coat. However, this is a 35 year old opera coat and may have minor signs of age related wear. There is no rubbing of the velvet, no fading or variations in color, and no stains that I could find. The coat appears clean and fresh and is ready to wear to any formal event.
