Carved and etched serpentine “old style” eagle fetish. Carved from a gorgeous green and off-white serpentine stone with a turquoise gift and eyes Our notes indicate that this is a traditional “old style” and primitive eagle carving in which the wings are etched and not carved. Unique interpretation and beautiful stone. Our records note that the carver is Zuni artist, Jesse LaBouaf, however, it is not signed and we can find no information on this carver. Approximately 2 3/4″ x 1 1/8 x 1/2″. Approximately 54.4 grams total weight. The eagle is a highly sacred and revered creature as it flies the highest of all and therefore, is the closest to God. It symbolizes strength, wisdom and courage. They are spirit helpers and guides and represent respect and honor. Fetishes are highly respected and are mystical, powerful talismans valued by Native American and other cultures throughout the world. The Zuni carvers are perhaps the best known. A classic example of her fetish carving work circa 1990’s. Ellen was the matriarch of the Quandelacy family of carvers….. She was known for showing the gender of her horses, as you can see this is a stallion. Note two small holes by the rear of the horse… This was to show the gender of the horse….. Her horses are highly sought after. Made for a pendant or necklace, with hole as shown…. Or for a stand alone carving. Still has a beautiful polish to the turquoise.

American Indians have used fetishes throughout recorded history. Fetishes are believed to hold magical powers and protect the owner or craftsmen from various problems of mind or body. Some believe that their mystical powers can even protect against problems of the universe. It is also believed that the care a fetish receives is directly proportional to the protection it will provide. Indians believe that fetishes must be properly cared for. They are given offerings of cornmeal and kept in special turquoise encrusted fetish pots or pouches. Often fetishes are adorned with turquoise, arrowheads and feathers.
